In support of National Breastfeeding Month, Metro Health’s Baby Café is trying to spread the importance of breastfeeding.
Among women who received lactation education and/or support at Baby Café, 97.4 percent initiated breastfeeding, 21.2 percent exclusively breastfed through the first three months of babies life, 14.8 percent exclusively breastfed through the first six months of babies life, and 70 percent breastfed some amount at six months of age.
The Baby Café model is designed to offer reliable care to all women with an emphasis on serving women who are uninsured, underinsured and Medicaid eligible, with the goal of reducing health disparities and inequities in our community. During the past four years, Baby Café has provided services to 4,075 women, 91 percent of whom reside in San Antonio.
Additionally, Baby Café offers classes for parents addressing the following issues: Breast Pumps 101, Wearing Your Baby, Baby CPR, Car Seat Safety, and Maternal and Infant Nutrition.
Metro Health opened Baby Café to offer high quality services, at no cost to all women in San Antonio and surrounding areas of Bexar County. Metro Health’s Baby Café is a “stand-alone” facility centrally located in San Antonio. It is open Monday-Friday and select Saturdays of each month. To learn more, go here.
Not Angry, Empowered
The Black Women’s Leadership Alliance (BWLA) held an exciting breakfast and discussion themed “Not Angry, Empowered” featuring prominent San Antonio Business Women. The panel participants were Dr. Belinda Richardson, Licensed Marriage and Family therapist who has been practicing since 1999 and in 2011 established her own private practice, Grace For Life Counseling and Consulting Associates; Lynnette Watkins, M.D.., M.B.A., FACS, FACHE, CPE, Tenet Health Care administrative veteran, fellowship-trained and board certified Ophthalmologist, and Chief Medical Officer for Baptist Health System; Michelle Scarver of Money Management, Ltd., Certified Specialist with over 30 years experience in the financial services industry as a CPA, a big -4 auditor, controller, portfolio manager and wealth advisor; Dyanne Sampson, Vice President of Procurement at VIA Metropolitan Transit and former Director of Procurement at Hampton Roads Transit in Norfolk, Virginia.
The Black Women’s Leadership Alliance (BWLA) was born out of the desire of a small group of women who saw a void in women’s leadership programs that specifically addressed the needs of Black business women who want to advance to higher ranks in corporate America. BWLA is committed to addressing the needs of Black women by being the catalyst that encourages innovation, collaboration and sisterhood among Black women. The organization also provides support and resources to Black women in business and professional women who seek to enhance their leadership skills through mentoring, advocacy and professional development
New Head Of the WMS-AMEC
CENTRAL TEXAN DEBORAH TAYLOR KING BECOMES HEAD OF INTERNATIONAL MISSIONARY ORGANIZATION
Deborah Taylor King is the tenth elected International President of the Connectional Women’s Missionary Society (WMS) in the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC). She and other newly elected officers began their official roles in an installation service Thursday morning, August 1, 9 a.m. -12 noon in Columbus, Ohio, at the 19th Quadrennial Convention of the WMS-AMEC.
The organization has nearly half a million members performing missionary work in 32 countries across 5 continents. More than 3,500 people gathered at the convention to conduct business and elect officers to serve for the next four years. King ran for office unopposed. But, that level of support was not surprising to those in the WMS. King has a strong reputation for always working in service to others, being a strong leader in inspiring teams to success and a woman who walks in faith.
King grew up attending public schools in Austin, graduating from the original L.C. Anderson High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Business from St. Edward’s University. In 2018, she received an Honorary Doctor of Humanities Degree from Paul Quinn College in Dallas for her service to the community. King is also a graduate of Leadership Austin and has received numerous awards for her community involvement.
She has over 30 years of management expertise acquired in her position as an Area Manager at AT&T/SBC in Austin, Corpus Christi and San Antonio. Through this, she learned the power of teamwork and purpose. She demonstrated vision and imaginative insight, while formulating plans and strategies for success. So she applied these skills in leadership roles in the community.
She has served as First Vice President (VP) for Professional Women of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and as a loaned executive for the United Way, Inc. She was First Vice Chair for the Austin Area Urban League and a board member for Texas CASA. Currently, she is a board member and Vice President of the Austin Rosewood Community Development Corporation. She is a proud member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She is recipient of numerous awards for her civic, community and religious service.
King is a lifelong member of Grant AME Worship Center in Austin and became involved with the WMS at an early age as a member of its Young People Division (YPD). As an adult, she has served the WMS as Local President, Area Chairperson, Conference and District 1st VP, District President, Connectional Research and Status of Black Women, Connectional 1st VP and now President. She is the proud wife of Charles E. King, IBM retired; mother of Travis and grandmother of Dezmond. In her new role, her office will be in Washington, D.C.
