Mel Waiters Gets Street Named After Him

After over a year of gathering petitions and going through city council, fans, family and city leaders today celebrated the renaming of Rio Grande Street to Mel Waiters Way on the city’s East Side.

Mel Waiters died in 2015 after leading a long and legendary career as a musician on the Southern soul circuit with fan favorites like “Got my Whiskey” and “Hole in the Wall.”

He was born and raised in San Antonio and according to his website appeared with R&B and blues greats such as as Bobby Blue Bland; Bobby Womack; Gladys Knight; Betty Wright; The Manhattans; Clarence Carter; Shirley Murdock; Zapp Band; Evelyn Champaign King; Charlie Wilson; and Babyface.

SILVER SPRING, MD (August 13, 2019) – TV One will air THE AFRICAN PRIDE GOSPEL SUPERFEST on SundayAugust 25, 2019 at 7 p.m. ET/6C followed by an encore presentation at 8 p.m./7C. Held at the Schuster Performing Arts Center in Dayton, Ohio, the 19th annual celebration will bring together gospel recording artists and celebrities for one of America’s most anticipated television events in urban gospel. 

Hosted by film and television star Wendy Raquel Robinson, the one-hour telecast will feature a musical celebration honoring Pastor Donnie McClurkin with guest performances by Deitrick Haddon, Sensere, J. Moss, Tye Tribbett, The Shelby 5, Isabel Davis, Micah Stampley, Byron Cage, Demetrius West & JP and many more.
